4500’ Yancey NC                                    3:55 PM 3/31/2022 What a night last night was for wind. Gust 60-70 mph for several hours after midnight. That with the rain it sounded like house got pressured washed. We picked up a solid inch of rainfall this morning. Low this morning was pretty mild at 45F with a lot of cloud cover. After lunch we went to more 50/50 clouds and sun. High today 55F. Just another typical spring day. NW winds will kick in after midnight but no where near as strong as this morning.                                Friday thru Sunday  This no April fools joke but after midnight tonight we can see some light rain showers turn to snow flurries or even snow showers. This not unusual to see this happen. Actually past two April 1 we’ve had measurable snow. Wouldn’t expect any accumulation but can’t ever rule anything out for the high country. Temperatures will drop to upper 20’s Friday morning but any snow flurries should end

4500’ Yancey NC                                 3/30/2022 5:30PM A typical spring like day for the high country. We started out at 41F degrees. Winds have been out of the south which helped heat the day up to 59F. Winds will be very strong along border upwards of 70-100 mph in areas especially up in elevation. Rain works in after midnight with some thunder showers. Rain should clear up around noon Thursday.                                   Friday thru Sunday  Rain showers come in early Friday morning while temperatures cool so May end as flurries as NW winds power thru. Saturday will be overall cool day. Sunday will be lot of the same as Saturday.  Fires in pigeon forge area this afternoon will definitely continue to get worse unless a miracle happens. The rain in early morning hours will definitely help. Definitely keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Definitely a bad situation with high winds and dry ground.  Please don’t burn til we get some rai

4500’ Yancey NC                                 4:50PM 3/29/2022 Another cool mountain morning of 24F to start a beautiful cloudy day. Even with a cool morning we warmed up to become a pretty mild day with high of 48F.  Wind has been light but that will soon change. High wind warnings and wind advisories are up for lot of the high country. Wind cranks up tomorrow morning til Friday afternoon but the strongest will be Wednesday morning til Thursday morning.  Wednesday night will have rain showers that will turn to possible thunder showers Thursday. Can’t rule out flurries Friday morning for border counties in the highest elevations.  Cool air rushes in behind front so Friday will be a cool day overall. Saturday looks mainly dry til late. Sunday and maybe a lil chance of a shower Sunday. Nothing wild and crazy looks to be happening this week out side of the wind and thunder showers mid week.  After this week all eyes to the 9th-12th time frame of April.

4500’ Yancey NC                                 3/28/2022 4:05PM Clear skies this morning allowed temps to drop into the teens again. Morning low of 18F.  That makes back to back mornings with temperatures in the teens. Also at 1pm today was the first time since Saturday 3 PM we seen above freezing temps. Today high 38F. We will dip into mid 20’s tonight as clouds continue to thicken up. Another beautiful day in the high country.  Tomorrow looks like a very cloudy day on tap with highs in 40’s with low looks to be upper 30’s. Wednesday we will warm up a bit more before rain comes into the picture late Wednesday. Thursday looks to have some thunder showers with this cold front. Temperatures will likely crash quick once front passes. Could see some snow flurries in highest elevations Thursday night into Friday morning. Friday Saturday and Sunday looks to be cooler and definitely a chance of a freeze every morning this weekend. No harm still with no greene

4500’ Yancey NC                                    3/27/2022 3:35PM Wall to wall clear blue skies today. Absolutely a beautiful day to get out and do whatever you want to do in the high country. Low this morning 17F made for a nice crisp morning to go out and do some yard work. Warmed up to 30F today but the sun makes it feel warmer. Wind still blowing 10-15MPH with some gust 20+ mph. We will likely drop back in the teens tonight into Monday morning where Monday will be lil warmer in upper 30’s. Week ahead will be milder during days with cool mornings. Some showers middle of week will be much needed to dampen the ground since we been in a elevated fire risk. Not just this week we will have some surges it looks of cold temps. Also will be a active weather pattern so we need to keep a eye on any of those link up together at some point. Go out and enjoy the beautiful high country weather.                                  4500’ Yancey NC                                  3/26/2022 4:30PM Last night flurries turn to some light to moderate snow showers. Powdery snow accumulated to inch. Flurries still flying time to time as day goes on but no additional accumulation. Wind strong but will taper down after midnight. Sun angle eating up the snow on ground. But still some on ground. Low was 24F with high today of 33F. Tonight will be cold with lows in the teens.   Week ahead will be milder with showers possible Tuesday as the front that just passed returns as a warm front. Rain returns late Wednesday with showers and a possible rumble of thunder Thursday. Then end of weekend looks cooler with some moisture around. I will say there’s a shot of some moisture to be similar to last night event. Maybe some more snow. Let’s hope.  The way it looks April will be wild!  Roll coaster of swings and dips. But also severe and wintry side. Yes I said wintry the high country will probably h

4500’ Yancey NC                                    3/25/2022 3:15 PM  What a gorgeous day in the high country! Awesome day to get some yard work done and outside office work. We started the day below freezing at 31F and really the temps hasn’t risen much. High today 37F. Was partly cloudy I would say to start but around 11 am the clouds really started to thicken. The cold air in place before the moisture tonight. So that means snow showers will develop tonight into the morning. Accumulations will vary! Elevations above 3500’ can expect light accumulation in the favorable areas. Also will be windy into Saturday. Wind advisory in effect Saturday 6 am til 8 pm Saturday. 15-25 mph up to 50 mph gust. Sunday will be clear but cool.  Next week everything looks quite for most part. Will be mild days with couple solid rain chances mid week and first part of the weekend. Then all eyes on the first full week of April. Looks to be a possible cold snap so we wi

4500’ Yancey NC                                    3/24/2022 3:40PM What a day yesterday! Lot of severe weather yesterday to our east and south. Here nothing but light rain yesterday morning and few sprinkles and showers in afternoon. 0.39” was the final rainfall count.  This morning we woke up to low visibility and 36F to start the day. We have since cleared up and hit a high of 45F. If you haven’t check out the pictures and videos I posted from yesterday evening on the social  media accounts. Weekend forecast looks fun for us high country folks. Winter weather will make its presence Friday night and last into Saturday. Accumulation will be possible above 3500’ along the TN/NC Border. Having winter weather late March and all of April not unusual. But definitely a treat this late in season. We deserve it since December didn’t provide but few inches of snow. I do think Saturday during day we could still see snow showers but this time year it’s hard

4500’ Yancey NC                                   3/23/2022 3:30PM Today has been a rainy mild day with high of 51F.  We started the day rainy with low of 42F so today been pretty steady with temperatures. We have received 0.39” of rain  and for most part rain will be moving out but maybe some sprinkles for rest of day. Temperatures will fall to upper 30’s by day break Thursday.  Rest of week will be mild with rain retuning on Friday. Friday night into Saturday morning looks be a rain to snow scenario for the high country as temps drop to mid to upper 20’s. Winds will be howling Saturday. As of now a dusting could occur in the highest elevation above 3500’(Border Counties). But we still need to watch cause temperatures and track will be factors. Saturday into Sunday morning I believe the favorable NW Flow spots will continue to see some snow showers/flurries.  This coming weekend and first week of April will be cooler than avg. first week of April ha

Would have been hotter if clouds didn’t thicken this afternoon. So thank you clouds.Winds been 10-15MPH. The headline story was the thick smoke that was caused by prescribed burns in WNC.  Rain enters tonight and into the day tomorrow. Tomorrow afternoon should be drier and cooler. This weekend looks cooler for sure. Rain and snow looks to be possible this weekend. We need to closely  watch trends thru week cause high country could see some accumulation. Blue skies for majority of the day. Clouds are starting to show up out of the west. Today a true mountain spring day.   Rest of the week will be mainly quite til the weekend out side of Wednesday with just some rain but there’s a chance of a rumble of thunder. Severe weather to our south and west today and tomorrow. This weekend looks to be a solid cooldown on tap. Highs in 30’s and lows in the lower 20’s range kinda cool. Also there’s a chance for us high Country folks to see some snow and possible accumulation snow.                                    4500’ Yancey NC                                  3/20/2022 4:15 PM Winter still wants to show its muscle as first day of spring equinox is here. Light flurries stared last night and the early morning hours we had some good snow showers take shape as the NW wind was pushing thru. If this was January or February accumulation would have been more but half inch was welcomed. Started off the day at 27F but warmed up just a little to 36F. Winds have been gusty at times but not too crazy.  Week ahead warm afternoons after t cool mornings with chance of rain mid week. There’s no real warm up in near future and actually a possible cold snap coming end of week into the weekend. Will moisture be available? That will be the question but we have plenty of time to track that. But would definitely hold off on planting anything especially high Country folks. Unless you can wrap and cover the tender plants. A pretty mild early spring day with a high of 54F. Clear skies since the morning so wall to wall sunshine. Hot in the valleys with low to mid 70’s but the high elevations we stayed in 50’s. Clouds will increase this afternoon into the night.  Tonight clouds will increase with chance of light rain but could see some flurries 4K+ elevation as a little disturbance rolls thru. Sunday will be cooler highs low to mid 40’s after a morning of slightly below freezing start.  As of now next week looks a lot like what we had this past week. The day turned cloudy with little light rain. Just a trace of rain has fallen. Wind advisory still in effect til 8 am Saturday. Overall a typical early spring day.  Weekend looks like cool mornings with warm afternoons. Saturday night into Sunday morning there will be a little disturbance that will create light showers and even a few flurries for the high elevations. Cloudy day today turned into partly cloudy but rain will make its way back into the area tomorrow.  Only real excitement will be the wind advisory for the ETN mountains with up to 45 mph winds. That will be starting at noon tomorrow thru sat 8am. Lot times for us right on border we get gusty winds even when we’re not in the advisory areas so make sure the items that are not heavy are put away just incase. Also there could be few flurries possible with some light rain Sunday early morning but that will be reserved to highest elevations for any of the flurries if it even happens but there’s a chance. Temperatures really stayed steady over night. Still some snow pack with a solid 2-4” especially in the shaded north facing areas. Still need to watch out for black ice in areas that fall below freezing tonight on the back roads of the high country. Week ahead will be mild during day and cool at night. Rain makes its way into the area Wednesday thru Saturday it looks. What I’ve heard from people is the hard freeze did some damage especially in SC to tomatoes and other varieties of vegetables. Also some plants and trees got nipped a bit thru the region. Good thing for areas that got snow is some of the plants got insulated by the snow which in other words helped protect them some.                              4500’ Yancey NC                              3/13/2022 4:30 PM What a day yesterday snowy, cold and windy! Today we started out with the lowest temperatures of the year and season of 2F. We warmed up steadily thru the day to 29F. The high temperatures cause melting from the snow that fell yesterday but also it helped keep things colder having snow pack. 12.3” was the official total from the snow yesterday that ended around 6pm or so last night but few flurries flew til late night on and off. There’s still 8” of snow pack on the ground even in the sun areas. A little tid bit we had a major snow accumulation  in just a hr yesterday from the NW Flow of 2.3” in one hr! The week ahead will be warmer but Monday morning we will need to watch out for black ice and refreeze of slush since there’s still snow and moisture non some roads in the high country. Our temperatures been crashing since midnight where high was in the low 40’s and now currently 8F. Snowfall today intense as you can about get where 2.3” in one hr fell around midday. Snow still currently falling with 11.8” on the ground. These NW Flow squalls will continue into the afternoon and night. The NW Flow will shut down late and temperatures will continue to fall. Current temperature 43F with winds out of the SE. Overall  a beautiful day.   Now we get to the good stuff that will come shortly after midnight. Winter storm warning for the high country of NC with 5-7 inches and up to 10” especially for the favorable NW Flow locations. Winds will also be gusty 40 -  50 mph in the highest locations will be possible thru out the day tomorrow. Cold air will make its way in and temperatures will plummet through out Saturday. Lows will be in single digits by Sunday morning and windchills will be well below freezing. Also to note DOT will have hard time keeping up because there will be rain before the snow and plummeting temperatures will get to point that it will be extremely hard to keep up on the back roads.  All in all I think some will see more than the anticipated totals

All in all a beautiful day in the high country.  Big changes coming for the high country snow and cold will make its way here. Models all agreeing we will see accumulation along the border and it could be a nice mid event for some. How much varies and also models don’t do well on the back side NW Flow side of events. Above 4,000 ft and the favorable NW flow spots should see 4”+ when it’s all said and done. Lower areas and farther away from border to east that’s a mystery that we will see be solved in now cast.                                   4500’ Yancey NC                                  3/9/2022 3:15PM Rainy night and a rainy day. Our high today occurred in the morning hours of 44F and temperatures has fallen steadily to 36F. We’ve received 0.80” of rain since midnight which puts our weekly total over 2 inches. Still some light rain showers along the border with some wintry mix on highest elevations.  Saturday event seems about same as yesterday. Confidence grows higher as we approach Saturday event. What I’m thinking couple to few inches of snow safe bet for ETN and WNC border counties. Make sure you follow a good local source especially in WNC cause of the elevation differences. Not just snow we talking cold temperatures that will range from single digits to upper teens in varies locations all of the area. Likely will damage all new blooms and flowers that have popped out in past week in lower elevations.  Appreciate everyone support! Hope everyone has a great rest of there Wednesday

Total rain accumulation was just over a inch.  Rain moves in tonight and ends afternoon on Wednesday. Now we focus our eyes onto Friday night and let’s say til Saturday late night for now. We are talking about a possibility per models of a mid to major snow with cold temperatures for the weekend. Accumulation unknown still but model trends has been really good so far. Definitely something to watch especially the temperatures for the folks lower than 3500’ where blooms and plants are showing green.  Us high country folks everything still dormant so no worries.  Thank you everyone for reading these it means a lot to share the weather up here. We dry out later tonight before more rain tomorrow night.  Ok here’s the popular weather topic of the day. Will it snow and how cold will we get for the weekend? Here’s what I’m thinking. Friday night temperatures will crash where we should start to see some snow showers develop. Rain to snow scenario. Then Saturday we stay cold with snow continuing with a NW Flow that will set up.   The NW Flow set up I’m most confident on but with that and main event it has the possibility of a 24hr event for some that are in the favorable locations. Accumulations there’s no way to predict this far out and honestly we are still a long ways out from Satur

We were actually colder before midnight then we warm slowly thru the early morning hours. Partly cloudy day helped us not get above 60F or higher today. Winds also gusted 25 mph out of the south.  Changes are coming and thank goodness! After rain and possibly storms tomorrow we cool down and we cool down pretty quick. Also that will be the start of a pretty active pattern for at least the next couple weeks. High country snow chances will possibly come to reality or at least that’s the hope. It looks likely we won’t see any 60’s or higher til maybe end March or April. No greenery up here so there will be no harm for the possible cold that we will receive. Winds have gusted to 25 mph out of North this morning then as day went on it’s blowing out of the south west .  We will have few more days of mostly sun and warm then Monday brings us chance of rain. Then we will have to watch for the colder air that looks likely now to affect us especially in the high country. March 10-20 will be very interesting to say the least as it looks now. So keep the warm jackets out for at least another couple weeks. And hold off on the gardening especially the tender plants.  Hopefully we can get some more active weather so these blogs can be more interesting.  Appreciate everyone and hope everyone has a great rest of there Thursday.  Twitter @secusc1993 TikTok @secbuck YouTube NC TN High Country WX

4500’ Yancey NC                              3:30 PM 3/1/2022 On the first day of meteorological spring we hit 46F.(45F currently). Definitely a shorts and short sleeve type of day hanging out on porch doing some work. Sun powerful today but there’s a light 5 mph or so NW Wind keeping it nice and cool. We did start out at 29F but it didn’t take long to warm up once sun came up this morning. Dry weather stays in forecast with cool morning and warm during day.  We are not done with cold after this week we need to focus on mid month there’s hints of the possibility of cold shots of air and maybe some wintry weather. The winter weather part it’s too far to know anything or if it happens. But we can definitely watch for pattern flips. This time of year there generally brief but can be potent. Let’s enjoy the sunshine while we have it this week! Have great rest of your Tuesday!  Twitter @secusc1993 Tik Tok @secbuck  YouTube @ NC TN High Country WX
